Tips and tricks for low-calorie baking
1. Choose fruity sugar alternatives
Most sweet treats are not only real calorie bombs but above all fat traps. But don’t worry, these are easily bypassed! The next time you bake a fruit cake, feel free to reach for particularly ripe fruit. Due to their high degree of ripeness, they contain a lot of fructose – and you don’t have to add sugar! However, you should rather keep your hands off canned fruit and the like. They usually have very high sugar content.
2. Replace basic ingredients with alternatives
Some basic ingredients can easily be replaced with lower-calorie alternatives. For example, you can replace the butter or margarine in the batter with creamy yogurt. It is even lower in calories if you bake a sponge cake or yeast dough instead of a batter, as these types contain less fat and sugar. You can generally replace butter with twice the amount of low-fat quark, replace half of the specified eggs with one egg with 3 tablespoons of water and a pinch of baking powder. Instead of sugar, it is better to use rice syrup, agave syrup, stevia, or liquid sweetener. If you need some oil for baking, you can easily replace 2/3 of it with the same amount of buttermilk or yogurt.
3. No cream, please!
Are you of the opinion that whipped cream should not be missing from the cake? Then we also recommend the low-calorie version! For cakes, for example, you can replace greasy cream with yogurt and low-fat quark mix. This makes even the classic cheesecake low in fat. You are welcome to use buttermilk instead of sour milk. In general: Always choose the low-calorie variant in the refrigerated section!
Last-minute low-calorie baking tricks
If you want to save a few calories on the last few meters, you should definitely take the following tricks to heart – then nothing stands in the way of low-calorie enjoyment!
- Use a lot of fruit for your baked goods – this ensures a healthy sweetness!
- Use paper liners when baking muffins. This will avoid baking pans that need to be greased.
