Which? reveals cheapest supermarket for Christmas dinner this year and it’s not Tesco or Sainsbury’s

THE cheapest supermarket to buy your Christmas dinner from this year has been revealed and it might surprise you.

Research carried out by Which? compared the price of a festive feast at five major supermarkets.

It compared a basket of all the big day must-haves including sprouts, a turkey crown and a Christmas pud.

Also in the basket were potatoes, a Knorr chicken stock pot, Ocean Spray wholeberry cranberry sauce, carrots, parsnips, red cabbage, Paxo sage and onion stuffing mix.

Asda had the cheapest basket for the 10 Christmas lunch items at £30.72.

Tesco came in second at £32.07 and Sainsbury’s followed with £35.57.

Coming in fourth at £37.21 was Morrisons.

The most expensive at £43 was Waitrose making the ingredients at Asda over £12 cheaper.

Which? carried out a second comparison including Lidl and Aldi, but It could only match seven items across the retailers.

The second comparison with the two budget supermarkets didn’t include Christmas pudding, stuffing and cranberry sauce.

The smaller Christmas basket was found to be cheapest at Aldi at £22.30. Lidl was only 14p more expensive than Aldi.

Asda came third with £23.72, Tesco was fourth with £23.82, and Sainsbury’s fifth at £26.07.

In second to last place was Morrisons with £29.52 and then Waitrose at £33.25.

Turkey crown comparison

The experts at Which? also had a go at comparing the price of turkey crowns across the shops.

They found the price was the same at Aldi and Lidl (£15.49).

Asda, Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Morrisons came next with £16.50, £17, £19 and £21.99 respectively.

But a similar size crown at Waitrose was almost over £10 more than Aldi and Lidl at £25.

The analysis is based on a medium frozen turkey crown with a weight range of 2.3-2.5kg.

Experts at Which? also compared the prices at the seven supermarkets over the past year to see how much they’ve increased with inflation.

They found Morrisons had gone up the most from £17.50 in 2021 to £21.99 in 2022.

Meanwhile, the turkey crown saw the least inflation at Sainsbury’ss where it went from £17.50 in 2021 to £19.00 in 2022.

The Sun reached out to all supermarkets for comment.

It comes as Christmas turkeys could cost double in the run-up to the big day amid major shortages.
