WHATS IT LIKE? A cosy country pub with rooms. Think roaring log fires, real ales and an unfussy atmosphere.
The Ship was once a smugglers haunt but is now a haven for dog walkers. There was a constant procession of pets in the rustic bar, which our Westie pup Ernie loved.
ROOMS ANY GOOD? Lovely. We stayed in Seafields, a marsh-view family room with a double and twin beds upstairs.
The room had a retro radio, TV and lush White Company toiletries.
The complimentary tea, coffee and biscuits were a nice touch and Ernie was made to feel as welcome as the human guests, too.
EAT HERE OR GRAB A PIZZA? The Ship has an AA two-star rosette for its food and is also in the 2017 Good Pub Guide. We couldnt get enough of the home-made Scotch eggs (theres even a veggie version) and the sticky toffee pudding is to die for.
Ernie joined us for dinner in the conservatory and got lots of fuss and biscuits from the friendly staff.
WHAT ELSE? The Suffolk Heritage Coast is right on your doorstep. Theres a great dog-friendly beach just minutes away and countless walking trails. RSPB Minsmere and the charming town of Southwold are also close.
SO YOUD GO BACK? Definitely. Pubs as dog-friendly as this are rare.
WHATS THE DAMAGE? Rooms start from 120 but look out for special offers, such as the half-price winter deal from December to February. To book, call 01728 648219 or visit shipatdunwich.co.uk.
