BANK holiday shoppers may be wondering what time supermarkets are open over the Christmas period.
Most retailers will be closed for certain days in order to give staff some much-needed time off.
Keep reading to find out when your local store may be open
Christmas Day falls on a Sunday in 2022, which means there’s an extra bank holiday on the following Tuesday, December 27.
This is as well as the usual Boxing Day bank holiday on Monday, December 26.
There will also be an added bank holiday on January 2, 2023 due to New Year’s Day falling on a Sunday.
Opening hours can vary from branch to branch, so check your local store times before you make the trip.
Most big supermarkets will have their opening times listed on their websites.
Here’s what each supermarket has said it will do over the Christmas bank holiday.
Tesco
All Tesco supermarkets will be closed on Christmas Day this year as staff relax for the festive celebrations.
Larger stores will be shutting up shop earlier on Christmas Eve at 6pm, with Express stores staying open until 10pm.
On Boxing Day, Tesco Extras and superstores are open 9am to 6pm.
Most Express shops will close at 7pm and some larger ones will close at 6pm.
The following day (Tuesday, December 27), Extras and superstores will open at 8am and close at 8pm.
The majority of Express stores are open for normal trading hours, with 24-hour stores opening at 6am.
Selected larger Express stores will open shorter hours, from 8am to 6pm.
Tesco opening hours over the festive period vary from store to store and by location, so it is advising customers to find their local store opening times on its website.
This is also the best place to check for petrol filling station opening times, as these can vary from the main store opening hours.
Aldi
Aldi stores are closed on Christmas Day and Boxing Day as they usually are during the Christmas period.
The majority of stores will then be open from 8am until 8pm between Christmas and New Year.
The discount supermarket’s opening hours vary depending on where you live.
You can find your closest Aldi using its locator tool on its website.
Lidl
Outlined below are Lidl’s broad opening hours for the festive season.
But, these times may vary by location, so the supermarket is encouraging customers to look at its store finder to double-check.
Stores will be closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and on New Year’s Day.
On December 27, most Lidl shops will be open from 8am to 10pm.
Sainsbury’s
All Sainsbury’s supermarkets will be closed on Christmas Day.
The majority will then be open on Boxing Day between 10am and 5pm.
On December 27, most are open from 8am to 8pm, but opening hours will vary by store, so it is best to check the store locator on the website.
Opening hours can vary though, so Sainsbury’s advises customers to check the website for the latest details for their area.
Marks and Spencer
All M&S stores will be closed on Christmas Day and Boxing Day.
As a general time, stores will then be open on December 27 and 28 from 9am until 8pm.
Of course, store hours will vary across the country so do check with your local branch before visiting.
You can find your nearest store and check its opening hours using the locator on the M&S website or on the M&S App.
