Twelve million visitors a year can’t be wrong: Heidelberg is one of the most beautiful cities in Germany! Picturesquely located on the banks of the Neckar, it is the epitome of romance for tourists from all over the world.
Ideal location
The bridge, the old town, the castle – this panoramic view has fascinated poets, painters and philosophers. Johann Wolfgang Goethe wrote more than 200 years ago: “One can say that the city with its location and its entire surroundings has something ideal.”
Old bridge
The Old Bridge is one of the landmarks of the city. There was a wooden bridge over the Neckar at this point as early as 1284, but it regularly fell victim to flooding. The stone bridge was not built until 1788. It connects the old town with the opposite bank of the Neckar.
World famous ruin
The palace of the Palatinate electors towers above the old town. In the 17th century it was destroyed by French troops and left in ruins. The aura of transience is what makes this place so appealing to this day.
Romantic backdrop
The Heidelberg Castle is undeniably the main attraction of the city. During the renovation at the end of the 19th century, some state rooms were restored and can be visited today. But the ruined walls are at least as exciting for tourists from all over the world.
Cozy old town
The floor plan of the old town dates from the Middle Ages, most of the facades from the Baroque period. There are also many small cafes, restaurants and shops – the tourists are enthusiastic! Especially visitors from the USA and Japan love this picture book city.
Honorable University
“Semper apertus” – always open, that’s the motto of the University of Heidelberg. It was founded in 1386, making it the oldest in Germany. Hegel, Bunsen, Habermas – famous scientists and philosophers taught here. And the students have always brought a breath of fresh air to Heidelberg and sometimes caused a stir.
Old student prison
As a punishment for disturbing the peace at night, whether because of drunkenness or fencing fights, students used to be sent to the prison. They were imprisoned for up to four weeks. However, the students were allowed to attend their lectures. Then they had to go back to the detention room, where many immortalized themselves with their likenesses and sayings.
Literary Seal of Approval
Great poets have visited the city and sung about it. Goethe was here, Eichendorff, Hölderlin, Jean Paul, Mark Twain – the series can be continued. And even today, Heidelberg is characterized by a lively author scene. The annual highlight is the literature festival in summer. Heidelberg has been the first UNESCO City of Literature in Germany since 2014.
Animal mascot
A monkey is mentioned at the Old Bridge as early as the 15th century. Today’s bronze sculpture was erected in 1979 and is a popular photo motif. It is said: Whoever touches the figure comes back to Heidelberg.
Romantic light show
The fireworks above the castle attract thousands of onlookers several times in the summer. Equipped with provisions and blankets, they secure the best places on the Neckarwiesen or on one of the excursion boats hours before the start. When the castle then shines in a colorful play of colors, Heidelberg once again lives up to its reputation as a dream destination for romantics!
