Major supermarket slashes the price of fresh turkeys just days before Christmas – but there’s a catch

A MAJOR supermarket has slashed the price of its fresh turkeys just days before Christmas – but there’s a catch.

Tesco has cut the price of its fresh whole turkeys only days after Aldi announced that it plans to slash its own prices.

Tesco has slashed the prices of its fresh turkeys days before the big day

Tesco will start selling fresh 2.5-4.5kg turkey for roughly £18 in stores and online from December 19, equal to £4 per kilogram.

That’s 19p cheaper per kilogram than the turkeys on offer at Aldi and Lidl.

And Tesco’s medium and large fresh turkeys will also have their prices cut – meaning that they will also cost just £4 per kilogram.

Tesco’s small whole turkeys feed 6-10, its medium-sized birds feed 11-14 and their largest bird feeds 15-18 people.

But there’s a major catch and only specific shoppers will be able to take advantage of this deal.

This is because the £4 per kilogram offer is only Clubcard holders.

Those without a Clubcard will pay roughly £5 per kilogram on average – meaning they’ll get a better deal elsewhere if they don’t sign up for the scheme.

Both Aldi and Lidl will start selling their small, medium and large fresh birds for £4.19 per kilogram tomorrow (December 19) – but Tesco Clubcard holders have access to the cheapest birds right now.

Tesco has also slashed the prices of its turkey crowns and Clubcard holders will pay just £8.50 per kilogram from tomorrow.

But remember, the product is only available while stocks last and you might find that your closest store doesn’t have the turkeys in stock.

Shoppers who buy their turkey online should also factor in the minimum spend and extra costs for delivery.

Jason Tarry, Tesco UK chief executive said: “This year, household budgets are under more pressure than ever and so we are absolutely committed to helping our customers with the cost of the Christmas shop.

“Hundreds of thousands of fresh turkeys will be arriving in store tomorrow morning and we have some unmissable deals, starting from just £4/kg with a Clubcard.

“Together with our Festive 5 veg, that means you can pick up everything you need for a great value Christmas dinner at Tesco.”

The price drop comes after several supermarkets announced plans to slash the price of their veggies before Christmas.

Aldi dropped the price of its “Super Six” vegetables today and customers will be able to get two kilograms of potatoes for just 15p.

And Sainsbury’s customers can bag a number of veggies for just 19p from today.

The cost-cutting comes after Lidl started selling a number of vegetables for 19p earlier this week.

But the news follows the announcement that there will be no geese for shoppers this Christmas after the entire flock had been lost.

Gressingham, which supplies all of the UK’s biggest supermarkets with frozen and fresh geese, duck, and turkeys, said that its entire geese flock had been lost.

The Sun recently compared turkey prices across a number of major supermarkets.

We’ve explained below how Tesco Clubcard works and how to apply.

How does Tesco Clubcard work?

Shoppers who use their Clubcard can also get discounts on selected items.

Clubcard vouchers are collected when you scan your membership card at the till at Tesco.

You get one point for every £1 spent – or one point for every £2 on fuel – and 150 points is equivalent to a £1.50 voucher.

It’s better value for money to spend vouchers with one of Tesco’s reward partners, but you can also spend them on your supermarket shopping.

Points are worth up to three times more when you redeem them with one of the supermarket’s partners.

How do I get a Clubcard?

Signing up to become a Tesco Clubcard member is free and easy, and as well as cheaper prices you’ll earn points too.

You’ll have to fill out a registration form on the supermarket’s website which requires you to set up a Tesco account if you don’t already have one.

Once you’ve signed up by filling in your personal details, you’ll need to allow up to 24 hours between the application and completion of your Clubcard registration to be a member.

But you can still earn points in the meantime as you’ll be emailed a Clubcard number when you apply.

Just take this number to customer services when you’re next in-store and they will add your points to your Clubcard.

How do I use my Clubcard?

Once your physical Clubcard has been sent out to you in the post, you can use it to collect points on food, fuel, fashion and more, in-store and online – just scan it at the checkout.

When doing your food shop online, your points will automatically be added if you’re signed in with the account attached to your Clubcard.

You’ll get any items with Clubcard prices cheaper when you use your loyalty card.
